Explanation:

Best friends from primary school who are missing each other’s company during the coronavirus lockdown are writing to one another to keep in contact.

Tyler Swetman, aged seven, and Pippa Ellis, aged six, from Coton Green Primary School are sending letters to stay in touch.

Tyler came up with the idea and said in his first letter: “I hope you are having a great time because I am and you should be too, I hope. Wishing you a great day. Lots of love.”

Tyler’s mum Becca Swift explained: “Basically Tyler got a little upset on Thursday night saying he was missing his friends and being able to go to school.

“I said ‘well why don’t you draw them a picture or write something so that when you all go back you can show it to them’ and then he actually said ‘I want to send a letter’.

Tyler came up with the adorable idea.

“I got in contact with the parents as I know them through school and asked for their address and he wrote his letter and we had a little walk round to the post box and to get some stamps and he posted it.

“He didn’t actually let me know what he had wrote! But Pippa’s mum took a picture and sent it to me. He is so lovely. It is something that kids don’t really do nowadays. When we were younger we used to have pen pals but nobody really does that now. I did tell him his friends would write him one back and he was really excited.

“He is really close to some of his friends and I knew he would be missing them but when he got upset it broke my heart.

“He is coping quite well now. He has been asking a few questions about what is going on and I have explained not in too much detail that we can’t go out as there is a virus and we don’t want to catch it so we need to make sure we wash our hands.

“He has not really asked to go anywhere or do anything because he knows he can’t which is good. We have set up a daily routine, not too strict or anything, but we get up and do PE with Joe Wicks in the morning and then a bit of writing from school and then we try and make the afternoon a bit more fun with arts and crafts and he has been doing some cooking the last few days as well.”

Pippa is going to write back to Tyler.

Pippa’s mum Gemma Ellis added: “Tyler was a bit upset when he realised he wasn’t going to see his friends at school and he suggested the letter. Pippa hasn’t had chance to reply yet but she is going to.

“I don’t know what she will say, I think probably what she has been up to and that she hopes Tyler is ok as the are quite good friends.

“She couldn’t believe the postman had brought her a letter! She felt really special! She is missing her friends and her cousin. It is quite hard for them. They will definitely have a big catch up when all of this is over, maybe a hug when we are allowed to!

“She is doing her school work and she is playing in the garden and trying to get some fresh air to keep herself busy.”
