  • It is an index that measures the air quality regularly.
  • The objective of this index is to relate the air quality to human health.
  • It is reported by the Environmental Protection Agency, mainly for five primary air pollutants. They are- carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone( ground level), sulfur dioxide and particulate matter.
  • The index is directly proportional to the pollution level,i.e. higher the index, higher is the level of air pollution.
