Answer:

Back bone is also called the protector of spinal cord. It comprises of several bones called vertebrae.

The total number of vertebrae present in back bone is 33 during birth, but reduces to 26 in adult.

The vertebral formula in case of backbone is :

C7 ,T12, L5, S1, Co1,

where C is cervical vertebrae, T is thoracic vertebrae, L is lumbar vertebrae, S is sacral vertebrae and Co refers to coccyx.

It contains vertebral canal through which the spinal cord passes downwards.

Now coming to spinal cord.

It is the downward extension of the medulla oblongata of the brain through the vertebral canal of the back bone .

It gives origin to 31 pairs of spinal nerves.

It extends from the base of the brain from the foramen magnum to the level of L2 vertebrae.

The lower part of the spinal cord presents tuft of nerves (like the tail of horse) called CAUDA EQUINA
