Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born July 23, 1856 in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra into a middle class Brahmin family as keshav gangadhar tilak. His father, Gangadhar Ramachandra Tilak, was a Sanskrit scholar and a famous teacher and his mother Parvati Bai Gangadhar was a housewife. In 1886 the entire family of Tilak was shifted to Poona after his father got transferred there. Tilak was an excellent student and was very good in mathematics since childhood. From an early age, he demonstrated intolerance for injustice, and was not afraid to speak the truth. Tilak joined the Anglo-Vernacular School in Pune and was educated by well-known teachers. He was among India’s first generation of youth to receive a modern college education. After passing the Matriculation Examination, Tilak joined the Deccan College and graduated from there in 1877, with a first class in mathematics. Tilak began teaching mathematics at Fergusson College in Pune. He also organised the Deccan Education Society with some of his friends to improve the quality of education for India’s youth. He also cleared the L.L.B. from the Elphinstone College, Mumbai.

Tilak was a great social reformer and activist. He was a great reformer and throughout his life he emphasized on the concepts of women education and women empowerment. Tilak educated all of his daughters and did not marry them till they were over 16. To inspire a sense of unity, he introduced the festivals like ‘Ganesh Chaturthi’ and Shivaji Jayanti’. Tilak travelled from village to village and motivated villagers, farmers, students and labourers to join the struggle for Independence. He issued a call for the banning of child marriage and welcomed widow remarriage to make the society stronger.

Gangadhar Tilak was a scholar, teacher, philosopher, social reformer, and the first leader of the Indian Independence Movement. He was popularly called as Lokmanya (Beloved of the people). He was a scholar of Indian history, Sanskrit, Hinduism, mathematics, law, and astronomy. He was one of the first and strongest freedom fighters who strongly convince the idea of Swaraj (complete independence). His famous quote, “Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it!” is well-remembered in India even today. In 1881, he established two newspapers, the Marathi Kesari and The Mahratta, published in English, to arouse political consciousness in the general population. After being imprisoned for sedition from 1908 to 1914, he emerged as a great political leader and helped to found the Home Rule League.

When Tilak heard about the incident of Jallianwala Bagh massacre his health started declining. Bal Gangadhar Tilak was died on August 1, 1920. One can learn self-dedication, self-respect and the motivation of giving all for its motherland freedom from Tilak’s life. His life is the perfect example of Simple living and high thinking. He led a simple life, and offered himself, body and soul, to the service of the nation. Sh Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s life inspires me to be like him and do whatever I can do for my country.
