The bhakti movement started in the tamil nadu around 6th century . it spread from there karnataka and Maharastra , bhakti movement was popularized by the alvars who were followers of vishnu and nayanars who were followers of shiva . sankaradeva and chaitanya were famous bhakti saints from east india the idea of bhakti was mentioned in the bhagvat gita .
