Azad was a dominant figure in those freedom fighting revolutions occured during the years when the British ruled. He was active in the protest against the brutal killing of Lala Lajpat Rai at Lahore in 1928. Together with Bhagat Singh, they formed the Hindustan Socialist Republic Army after the decease of the main founder Ram Prasad Bismil.

In 1928, he set out on a journey with Bhagat Singh to unify the general public against the British Government. His sole aim was to make India independent again.

He revolutionized until he got surrounded by British police at Alfred Park, Allahabad. He shot himself to death, not wanting to be captured alive. He died in 1931.
