In 2017, much of warfare and combat have become a digital affair. As the news has shown us, cyber threats are a constant reality. But do cyber threats really pose a serious threat to national security, and if so, how often?

Cyber Threats: The Modern Warfare

As we firmly enter the digital age and people become increasingly more comfortable with the internet and the cyberspace that makes it up, innovation has occurred at an increasingly fast pace. Unfortunately, not all innovation is for the better. The same way that nuclear energy can be used to provide a city with power, or level it with a nuclear strike, the power of the internet can be used for both good and evil.

These attacks are becoming more common too, with over 1061 recorded attacks occurring in 2016 alone. Some big names were the target of these hacks, including the US Department of Justice, the Democratic National Convention, and Yahoo.

72% of the 2016 attacks were motivated by cyber crime, or simply just to acquire money or resources illegally. However, a surprising 14% of these hacks were done because of what is known as hactivism, which is hacking for political motives or as a way to 'fight the system'. 13% of these hacks were for the purpose of espionage or warfare between nations.

So you can see why cyber security has become a priority in the US.
