Many people of the Hindu faith observe Dussehra through special prayer meetings and food offerings to the gods at home or in temples throughout India. They also hold outdoor fairs (melas) and large parades with effigies of Ravana (a mythical king of ancient Sri Lanka). The effigies are burnt on bonfires in the evening.

दशहरे के दिन कई जगह अस्त्र पूजन किया जाता है। वैदिक हिन्दू रीति (Dussehra Puja Vidhi) के अनुसार इस दिन श्रीराम के साथ ही लक्ष्मण जी, भरत जी और शत्रुघ्न जी का पूजन करना चाहिए। 
इस दिन सुबह घर के आंगन में गोबर के चार पिण्ड मण्डलाकर (गोल बर्तन जैसे) बनाएं। इन्हें श्री राम समेत उनके अनुजों की छवि मानना चाहिए। गोबर से बने हुए चार बर्तनों में भीगा हुआ धान और चांदी रखकर उसे वस्त्र से ढक दें। फिर उनकी गंध, पुष्प और द्रव्य आदि से पूजा करनी चाहिए। पूजा के पश्चात ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराकर स्वयं भोजन करना चाहिए। ऐसा करने से मनुष्य वर्ष भर सुखी रहता है।
