The Maratha Empire or the Maratha Confederacy was an Indian power that ruled a significant part of the Indian subcontinent in the eighteenth century.
The Marathas are a Hindu warrior group from the western Deccan Plateau (display day Maharashtra) that rose to unmistakable quality by building up a Hindavi Swarajya.
The Maratha Empire, at its pinnacle, administered over an expansive region in the Indian sub-landmass. Aside from catching different districts, the Marathas kept up a substantial number of tributaries who were limited by consent to pay a specific measure of general assessment, known as Chauth.
Marathi is gotten from Maharashtra, a type of Prakrit (a spoken form of the traditional Sanskrit). Languages of Marathi incorporate Konkani, Varadhi, and Nagpuri. Marathi is composed in a sort of script known as Devanagari, or a cursive type of Devanagari called Modi.

There is no doubt that the single most important power that emerged in the long twilight of the Mughal Dynasty was the Marathas. Initially deriving from the Western Deccan, the Marathas were a peasant warrior group that rose to prominence during the rule in that region of the Sultans of Bujapur and Ahmednagar. The most important Maratha warrior clan, the 'Bhonsles', had held extensive jagirs (land-tax entitlements) under the Adil Shahi rulers, and these were consolidated in the 17th century.
The Marathas rose to power under Chhatrpati Shivaji. He was born in 1627 AD. He inherited the jagir of Poona from his father. Other prominent Maratha rulers were Venkoji, Sambhaji, Shahuji, Mahadji Shindhia, Balaji Baji Rao I, Balaji Baji Rao II, Kanoji Angre etc. Shivaji and other Maratha warriors fought the Mughal army with guerrilla warfare tactics.
The revenue system under Shivaji was based on that of Malik Amber of Ahmednagar. Chauth was 1/4th of land revenue paid to Marathas in order to avoid Maratha raids. Sardeshmukhi was additional levy of 10 % of lands which were considered hereditary rights.
Marathi language was spoken at the time of Shivaji and other rulers. Marathi language has been derived from the Maharashtri Prakrit language.
