Over the last century, fertilizers with nitrogen and phosphorous were used in large quantity leading to increased production of excess reactive nitrogen. Nitrogen pollution causes excessive richness of nutrients in water bodies causing dense growth of plant life in aquatic environments and also created “Dead Zones” in the coastal ocean. It also contributes to climate change, acid rain, smog, biodiversity loss, and more. Organic farming practices including composting of plant and animal materials, and use of manure as fertilizer and crop rotations result in higher rates of nitrogen recycling thus preventing nitrogen pollution. It also prevents loss or naturally found nutrients in the soil.
