Information about turtle nests and eggs:

Turtles use beaches to nest and lay their eggs. The female turtle comes up to the beach when it is dark in the night and lays her eggs. She creates a nest in a deep chamber with her flippers in a very meticulous manner.

Once she has created a nest she lays her eggs and covers the top with her flippers and later covers it with dry sand to camouflage it. She does this with so much precision to avoid predators from snatching away the eggs. She then returns to the sea.

The number of eggs in a nest is called a clutch and although the number varies, generally the turtle lays about 50 to 200 eggs in a nest. They take about 45 days to hatch.

They average about two to eight nests a season.  Once the mother has laid her eggs, she does not come to tend to them. The turtles emerge by themselves breaking free of the shells and help each other get to the top. They emerge on the sand as a big hatchling to protect themselves.
