इसका आकार मैना के बराबर होता है। इसकी चोंच भारी होती है, वक्षस्थल लाल भूरा, उदर तथा पीछे के हिस्से का अधोतल नीला होता है। पंख पर गहरे और धूमिल नीले रंग के भाग उड़ान के समय चमकीली पट्टियों के रूप मे दिखाई पड़ते हैं। त्रावणकोर के दक्षिण भाग को छोड़कर शेष भारत में यह पक्षी पाया जाता है।

It breeds in both deciduous and coniferous forests, and is common in residential areas. It is predominantly blue with a white chest and underparts, and a blue crest; it has a black, U-shaped collar around its neck and a black border behind the crest. Males and females are similar in size and plumage, and plumage does not vary throughout the year. Four subspecies of the blue jay have been recognized.
