In 4th Century BC, Leucippus & Democretus held that smallest thing is atom which could not be further divided.

In 18th Century AD, Dalton proposed his atomic theory based on this assumption..

Then, at the end of the nineteenth century, Stonley thought that atom can be further divided by the experiments of cathode rays..
