Lets divide the answer from 12th Century till 2018 but history of Maharashtra dated very back but for understanding purpose lets put it from 12

A) 12th Century-The Yadavas the descendant of Krishna were rulers of Maharashtra the capital was Devgiri Nowdays referred as Daultabad (Aurangabad District ) it was great period for Maharashtra though the name Maharashtra was not there but as per record Allauldin Khilji Attacked devgiri looted the Devgiri and even abducted daughter of King .So that’s the start of fall .

B) Islamic Rule:-After Demisal of Yadav king islamic rule started many autrocities and forced conversion occurs but some sculptures were built by Mughals .

C) Maratha Empire:- The founder of Maratha empire is Shri Shiv Chhtrapati Shivaji Maharaj though early the kingdom was not big but it slowly expanded by Samabhaji Maharaj later by Peshva King till Afghanistan.

D) British Rule:-After Defeating Marathas the britishers had eastablished empire all over India .

E) Independent India:-Though India got independence but formation of Maharashtra took place on 2nd may 1952 with lot of struggle.

During these 5 phase there are some prominent personalities who contributed in today's Maharashtra i will summarise some of them as per my knowledge.

Marathi literature flourished very well under the royal patronage of the Yadava kings who ruled from the capital of Devagiri during the period 850 to 1334.The prominent saints were flourished in these period i will summarise some of it .

a)Sant Dyaneshwar (1275 to 1296):-

Dnyandev or Mauli (1275–1296) was a 13th-century Marathi saint, poet, philosopher and yogi of the Nath tradition. He is founder of bhakti yoga or Varkari movement in maharstra which is still priactised by 9 crore marathi people .Though borne in Deshastha Marathi Bramhin family his family was excommunicate by orthodox bramhin society .He is the one who translated Bhagvad Geeta from Sanskrit to Prakrit Known as Dyaneshwari for common people as getting knowledge of sanskrit is dedicated for elite class only .His legacy is followed by Namdev (1270 to 1350) & Janabai ,Eknath (1533 to 1599),Tukaram (1608 to 1651) & Samarth Ramdas (1608 to 1681),Mahipati, (1715 to 1790), biographer of the above saints.

Sant Tukaram Mharaj ;-

Tukaram, also referred to as Sant Tukaram, Bhakta Tukaram, Tukaram Maharaj, Tukoba and Tukobaraya,

was a 17th-century Hindu poet and sant of the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra. He was part of the egalitarian, personalized Varkari devotionalism tradition. Tukaram is best known for his devotional poetry called Abhanga and community-oriented worship with spiritual songs known as kirtans. His poetry was devoted to Vitthala or Vithoba, an avatar of Hindu god Vishnu. The Kirtan which you can not find elsewhere in india .In marathi we have proverb “Dyandev rachila paya tuka zalasi kalas” which means Dyaneshvar maharj is founder of Varkari movement and Sant Tukaram is Apex of that Movement.(Varkari are those people which follow bhakti movement and travels from Dehu or Alandi to Pandharpur every year for Ashadhi Ekadshi).
