Chipko Movement(Tree hugging Movement) in the 1970s in the Garhwal Himalayas and in 1974 in Chamoli District both in Uttarkhand.
This Movement which inspired many eco groups helped in slowing down the rapid deforestation, exposed vested interests, increased ecological awareness, and demonstrated the viability(ability to scope) of human power.Above all it stirred up the existing civil society in India as never before. The society started taking a look at the tribal and made invisible people and their issues of livelihood frm a new perspective.
