Earthquakes are sudden vibrations inside the earth's crust caused by internal forces of the earth. They may also occur at the time of a volcanic eruption.
The point where the earthquake originates inside the earth is called the focus. Earthquake vibrations spread out in all directions from the focus.
The point on the earth's surface which is directly above the focus is called epicenter. This place experiences the most damage during an earthquake.
Earthquake tremors are recorded by an instrument called seismograph. The magnitude or intensity of an earthquake is measured by the Ritcher scale. The numbers in the scale range from 0-9.Earthquakes of magnitude 7 and above are very destructive and cause heavy damage to life and property.
Most of the world's earthquakes occur in belts of young fold mountains. These are areas where the earth's crust is weak and volcanic eruptions take place frequently.
The two major earthquake - prone belts of the world are-Circum Pacific belt-tightening circular belt around the Pacific Ocean and Mid Mountain belt (extending from east Europe right up to China, passing through Central Asia, Pakistan and India
