One of the most important themes in The Giver is the significance of memory to human life. Lowry was inspired to write The Giver after a visit to her aging father, who had lost most of his long-term memory.

I firmly believe Jonas and Gabriel died but the community received all the memories. In the book the giver was actually transferring the memories to the receiver which means when he does that his vision of the memory begins to fade. ... He basically died there and released memories.
