Inhaling carbon monoxide is dangerous because:

(a) Carbon monoxide combines with haemoglobin of blood.

•Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas, symbolised by the formula CO.

•Carbon monoxide actively binds with haemoglobin, and forms product namely, carboxyhemoglobin.

•It competes with oxygen, for binding site.

•This causes less binding of oxygen with haemoglobin.

•This results in inhibition of transporting oxygen to tissues and cells, which require oxygen to carry out their various metabolic and energy forming processes.

•Carbon monoxide has also been seen to effect the stability of oxygen.

•It has negative effect on release of oxygen from haemoglobin, thus causing problem in its release which is important requirement.
