Inian and Ezhilan argue about the light year. Inian tells that it is 9.46 × 1015m and Ezhilan argues that it is 9.46 × 1012km. Who is right? Justify your answer.

Inian is right.

speed of light = 3 × 10^6 m/s

So, we can calculate distance travelled in a minute, hour, day and eventually year.

"A light year is the distance that light travels in one year at constant speed.

Light year = speed of light  one year

Speed of light =c = 3.00105 miles per second

Time =t= 3.154107 seconds

d=c×t

d=3.00× 105 ×(3.154 ×107)

=9.46 × 1012=9.5 trillion miles

Let’s convert the light years into miles and kilometers.

Light year to kilometer ----- 9.461012 km

Light year to miles ------- 5.88 1012miles

Therefore, Ezhilan was correct.
