By gradual addition of KMnO4 into concentrated H2SO4, Mn2O7 as a strong oxidant is produced with oily green color. By heating, Mn2O7 decomposes to MnO2 which is brown. The mixture of MnO2 and residual KMnO4 gives reddish brown color.
