Concept

Algebra is the part of mathematics in which letters and other general symbols are used to represent numbers

Given

1) Initial position of yours = 2.6m

2) Initial position of your friend = 9.2m

3) You walk double the distance your friend walks

Find

Where do you both meet

Solution

you are at the position x = 2.6 m

friend is at the position x = 9.2m

Let the distance covered by your friend be xm

So the distance covered by you is 2x

When you and your friend meet

2x + 2.6 =  9.2 - x

3x = 9.2 - 2.6

3x = 6.6

x = 2.2

Position where you both meet.

2.6 + 2x or 9.2 - x

= 2.6 + 4.4 or 9.2 - 2.2

= 7.0 or 7.0

At 7 m you and your friend meets.
