It controls various autonomic functions such as respiration, heart rate, blood pressure etc. When it gets damaged body will not be able to perform all these functions which will prove fatal.

the function of medulla oblangata is to control activities of internal organs like respiration, heartbeat,etc.

so its injury leads to death of  a person
