The rivers in S.India tend to be non-perennial while rivers in N.India like the Ganga and Brahmaputra are perennial. Rivers in S. India also tend to have more rapids and waterfalls and are therefore difficult to navigate. Finally, S.Indian rivers have a swift flow and are generally only navigable in their lower courses.
