Inland waterways are more in north india than south india why

In South there are couple of places where Inland waterways is very good. In Kerala, especially in parts of Alapuzzha and Kollam, In Karnataka, areas around Shimoga has inland waterways.

However, in North, Bengal and NE its quite more used than South.
