Inland waterways are developed more in northern India than in southern India.

Some factors affecting this are as follows:-

1. Due to the the constant stream of adequate water such as Rivers in northern India are perennial and on plain land!

2. The proximity of waterfalls, torrents, sharp bends adjacent to river's passage can hinder the expansion of waterways which acts as the chief characteristics found in Southern India

3. Silting of the stream beds decrease the depth and formulates a problem for exploration. Water in the streams is sometimes reduced due to the deviation of water for sprinkling the fields.
