Input – Output Devices
As you know, a computer follows the I-P-O cycle for processing. Therefore, all the devices can be categorized as input devices, output devices, and processing devices. The input devices are used to give instructions to the computer. For example, keyboard and mouse. The output devices are used to display output of an operation. For example, monitor and printer.

Keyboard
The keyboard has already been identified as an input device. This is a component that closely resembles a typewriter console. The keyboard provides different keys to perform various operations.
- F1- F12 (Function keys)
Used to perform special functions that depend on the software being used.
- Enter or Return ↵
Used to execute an instruction or data being keyed in through the keyboard.
- Caps Lock
Used for keying in capitalized alphabets.
- Shift
a. Capslock off:
If pressed simultaneously with a character key, a capitalized alphabet is input.
b. Capslock on:
It reverses the above effect.
Also used to input the upper symbols for keys with two symbols or characters on them.
- Ctrl, Alt
Pressed with other keys, they input special messages to the computer.
- Backspace
Used to erase the character to the left of the cursor position.
- Num Lock
Used to activate the numeric keys on the Numeric keypad.
- Cursor keys
Used to move the cursor in the direction indicated.
- Home
Used to move the cursor to the left end of the current line.
- End
Used to move the cursor to the end of the current line.
- Page Up
Used to move the cursor up one page or one screen.
- Page Down

- Insert
Used to insert characters at the current cursor position.
- Delete
Used to delete characters at the current cursor position.
- Esc
Depends on the application. Usually used to cancel a command.
- Print Screen
Used to print whatever is displayed on the screen.
- Scroll Lock
Used to allow scrolling in a document.

Mouse
A mouse is a small device that is connected to the system unit by means of a long wire. This is another input device, whose movement causes the corresponding movement of a pointer on the screen. It usually has two or three buttons using which the user can select options from the screen.

VDU
Now that you are familiar with some input devices of the computer, let us take a closer look at an output device. Data that has been processed needs to be displayed to the user. This is done using the monitor or the VDU. The VDU is similar to a TV screen and can display both text and graphic images. The display can be either in black & white or color.

Printer
The output on the VDU cannot be stored for later reference. For a permanent output, you would require a printer that is also a common output device. Using the printer, you can obtain output on paper. Printers are capable of printing at very high speeds. The printers commonly used with the PC are the dot matrix printer, the ink-jet printer and the laser printer.

Microphone
A microphone is an input device that allows a user to speak to the computer to enter data and instructions into the computer or it is used to record sound.

Joystick
A joystick is a pointing device with a vertical lever mounted on a base. It is mainly used for computer games and ultrasound scanners in hospitals.

Scanner
A scanner is an input device used to capture information, such as, photographs and documents on paper and translate the information into a raster (bitmap) computer image.

Speakers
You can use speakers on a multimedia machine to listen to the sound files, which can be audio, recorded by a microphone or audio CDs.

Assignment 3; Hands-on
