Insecticides are any toxic substances used to kill insects. They are used primarily to control pests that infest cultivated plants or to eliminate disease-carrying insects in specific geographical areas. Some 10 000 insect species are crop-eating, and of these, approximately 700 species worldwide cause most of the insect damage to man's crops, in the field and in storage. The insecticides may be of natural or synthetic origin and recently gene coding for insecticidal proteins is being incorporated into various crop plants. Table 1 lists the most common classes of synthetic insecticides currently applied. The primary effects of insecticides on target species are: neurotoxicity by interference with sodium channel or interaction with neurotransmitter receptors, paralysis by disruption of energy metabolism, or growth inhibition by blocking chitin synthesis. Owing to the fact that organophosphates and carbamates share the same mechanism of action, exposure to the same active ingredients by multiple routes or to multiple organophosphates or carbamates can lead to serious additive toxicity. Natural insecticides include toxicants derived from plants such as tobacco, pyrethrum, nicotine, rotenone, limonene, and antibiotics such as avermectins extracted from actinomycetes. Fumigants are a group of volatile, organic molecules, used to kill not only insects and insect eggs, but also nematodes, and certain microorganisms in soil, greenhouses, grain elevators, and also in packaged products such as dried fruits, beans, and cereals. The term is related to the method of application that consists of completely filling an area to poison the pest.
