Ms. Penny- "It’s wonderful having a real fortune-teller living next door. Did you learn that out East, too?" Ms. Dollar- "I did (do). Twelve years I had of it, with my old man rising ( rise) to be a Lieutenant Quartermaster. He learned a lot, and I learned a lot more. But did you make up your mind now, Ms. Penny?"

Tenses of verbs-

  • The first blank has to be in the past tense form as the question asked was in the past form. That results in the answer being in the past tense. Hence, the verb form of do (present tense) will become did (past tense).
  • In the second blank the character is telling her experience in the fortune teller's life, which again needs to b in the past tense form. Thus, the verb form of 'be' will change to 'had'.
  • And for the third blank the correct tense of the verb should be present continuous. The present continuous form of 'rise' will be 'rising'.
  • Lastly, the blank with the question asked by the narrator, have could be the correct form but then the main verb make will have to change to made. Since that cannot be done the correct verb form of 'be' to use will be 'did'.
