SOLUTION

CORRECT QUESTION

TO DETERMINE

Insert three arithmetic means between - 20 and 4

EVALUATION

Let x , y , z are three arithmetic means between - 20 and 4

Then - 20 , x , y , z , 4 are in Arithmetic Progression

Let common difference = d

First term = a = - 20

x = - 20 + d

y = - 20 + 2d

z = - 20 + 3d

4 = - 20 + 4d

Now 4 = - 20 + 4d gives

4 = - 20 + 4d

⇒ - 20 + 4d = 4

⇒ 4d = 24

⇒ d = 6

Thus we have

x = - 20 + d = - 20 + 6 = - 14

y = - 20 + 2d = - 20 + 12 = - 8

z = - 20 + 3d = - 20 + 18 = - 2

FINAL ANSWER

The required three arithmetic means between - 20 and 4 are - 14 , - 8 , - 2
