inspiration is an active and expiration is passive process..How?

TheRevenant01: Quite confused.. but maybe to build up pressure gradient in inspiration , energy is req.
ankitalee: bt in both inspiration and expiration air moves from higher to lower pressure only
ankitalee: how can any of these be active?
TheRevenant01: That's why I was confused!
ankitalee: ok

Expiration is typically a passive process that happens from the relaxation of the diaphragm muscle that contracted during inspiration. The primary reason that expiration is passive is due to the elastic recoil of the lungs. While expiration is generally a passive process it can also be an active and forced process.

Inspiration is an active process because diaphragm and intercostal muscles contract during inspiration which require ATP expenditure.

Expiration is an inactive process because diaphragm and intercostal muscles relax spontaneously during expiration without expenditure of ATP.
