Muscles that expand the thoracic cavity help in inhalation, while those that contract the thoracic cavity help in exhalation.
Inhalation is called inspiratory function, while exhalation is called expiratory function.
Inspiratory muscles raise the sternum and rib cage as you inhale, while expiratory muscles lead them to depress as you exhale.
So, both these muscles are extremely important for the respiratory system.
