inspite of being one of the neighbours of a developed country likes the USA, why is the amazon basin well developed

An amazon basin is a thick rainforest. For the firsr time Europeans arrived here and some setteled here. But due to unavailability of living conditions they maved back to Europe. Since the people tried to settle here but it is not as easy as thought. Inspite of having a developed neighbour like USA it is still under developed.
