Being an indian, this question itself is very saddening . We survive, we are breathing, we are alive only because the farmers are there in their fields working very hard and here we see why are indian farmers poor!!
After having conversation with some farmers, the biggest and most common problems that i have noticed are listed below.
Minimum support price - yes , this is the most common hindrance that i think every farmer face in india, the government of india fix minimum price of the crops, which is very low as compared to what farmers deserve in actual , and this leads to zero or no profit or sometimes loss to farmers.Market is not open for farmers- As , the government fixes the prices, market for farmers becomes fixed, to that MSP (minimum support price) and they can't sell their crops in the market at the rates which they actually deserve. An indian farmer today is not even earning basic money that is needed to fulfill their basic needs.Illiteracy - one of the main reasons is this , illiteracy rate in india is very high, and specially farmers , maximum of them are illiterate, they are not able to take wise decisions and that is also a reason, of being poor.Middlemen and scams- This happens alot in india, the middlemen buy crops from farmers at a very very low rate , then sell it at high rate. They buy crops in big quantities , keep their stock and wait for the prices to go up , and sell it then and this leads to inflation as well.Lack of water- Even in this modern era, our farmers are dependent on rain for their irrigation, this is shameful for the government as well as us .And there are infinite number of reasons as well, which the government has to address because india can grow only when its farmers are prospering and they are happy.
Reasons for sad plight of the Indian farmers:
India is a tropical country, whose majority of the population practices farming or agriculture for a living. The maximum population of the country lies in its villages, most of the farmers in India live below the poverty line for many reasons.
They don’t own their own lands, most of the profit made is given to the owners, drought is also a reason and more often than not it’s the middlemen who takes the maximum profit generated by the sell of crops.
