Instructional scaffolding is the support given to a student by an instructor throughout the learning process. The instructor provides this support in order to enhance learning and aid in the mastery of tasks.

This term was introduced by Bruner and his colleagues in an attempt to operationalise the concept of teaching in the zone of proximal development (ZPD). This method can be applied in daily life, where the support a parent or teacher provides assists the natural growth of a younger, less experienced learner in their learning journey.

E.g. A student does not have the necessary reading skills required to understand a text being used in class, and a teacher adopts instructional scaffolding to improve the student's reading capabilities step-by-step until they can read the text on their own.
