"Integration of princely states was the most difficult task but Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel succeeded in resolving this." Evaluate the statement with reasons?
Answers
In 1947 when India became independent there were 562 princely states. It was a challenging task to integrate them with the Union of India. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who is also known as the Iron Man of India accomplished this task.
According to the Indian Independence Act of 1947 the princely states were allowed to join the newly born dominions of India or Pakistan or continue as independent states. Many of the rulers felt that it was a good opportunity to declare autonomy.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel made a lot of efforts to convince the princes to join the Indian Union. He introduced the concept of privy purses. The royal families were given a payment for their agreement to merge with India.
The process of integration of the princely states was almost complete by 15 August 1947. However, some states did not sign the Instrument of Accession like:
1. Piploda - It was a small state in central India. It acceded in March 1948.
2. Jodhpur - It tried to negotiate and get a better deal with Pakistan. Sardar Patel met Hanvant Singh and assured him that he would be allowed to import arms, during famines India would supply grains to Jodhpur and the place would be connected to Kathiawar by rail. So Jodhpur acceded to India.
3. Junagadh - It joined Pakistan. 80% of the population of Junagadh comprised of Hindus. A plebiscite was held in December and 99% of the people chose to join India.
4. Hyderabad and Kashmir - They wanted to remain independent. When Pakistani Army invaded Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh requested India for immediate military assistance and agreed to accede to India. After an armed encounter for four days in Hyderabad the Nizam was forced to merge his kingdom with the Indian Union.
In this way India all the princely states joined the Indian Union due to the efforts of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
