Let A be the point midway between the two charges.

Electric field intensity at A due to the two charges:

e =  \frac{kq1}{ {x}^{2} }  +  \frac{kq2}{ {x}^{2} }

If the two charges are equal in magnitude and opposite in sign, then E reduces to zero.
