When some other pathogenic cells such as bacteria, virus etc. enter the host cell, it makes and releases a protein called interferon. It helps in the communication among different cells regarding the existence of these pathogenic cells and energizes the immune system to fight the pathogens.

So, we can say that IFN is a protein that helps to eradicate pathogens from the host cells.
