The development of the internet was initially supported by a)ARPANET.

Explanation:

The Initial basic wide-area networking (WAN) concepts were originated in some computer science laboratories around the globe. The contract for developing the ARPANET project was awarded to be directed by “Robert Taylor” and managed by “Lawrence Roberts" by the U.S. Department of Defence. In 1969 first message sent over ARPANET from the computer science Professor ”Leonard Kleinrock's laboratory” at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to the other network join at ”Stanford Research Institute” (SRI). The protocols developed for internetworking to join multiple networks into a network was led by ARPANET project.
