After interviewing my grandmother and grandaunt I have found that, in olden days as there were no refrigerators, they used to preserve food by means of Dehydration, Pickling, Canning and salt curing.

EXPLANATION:  

Acidic fruits, vegetables and meats could be preserved by canning. Foods can also be preserved by dehydration. Salt curing was one such ancient technique where meat, fish and pork were preserved by applying salt that draws the moisture content.
