Tendulkar finishes domestic career in style as his 79-run knock guides Mumbai to victory vs Haryana

Whether it was a genius at work or pure coincidence, Sachin Tendulkar's last Ranji Trophy innings epitomized his entire career. A major part of his long career, spanning more than 24 years, has been spent playing the role of a builder of innings and a guide to his team. He has been the beacon of brilliance amid the gloom of mediocrity — a quality that Tendulkar summoned once again to rescue Mumbai from a tricky chase against Haryana at the Chaudhary Bansi lal Stadium here.

In this innings, like on many other occasions, he grinded, shielded his teammates and guided them to tackle the conditions and spirited bowling from Haryana. All that happened on Tuesday. Wednesday was about ensuring that the hard work didn't go waste.

And the master blaster delivered. Mumbai, resuming at 201 for 6 on the final morning, knocked off the remaining 39 runs without any loss. However, they were made to toil by intelligent field placements by hosts captain Ajay Jadeja and some disciplined bowling.

Tendulkar, unbeaten on 79 off 175 balls with the help of six boundaries, ended his Ranji Trophy career on a happy note as Mumbai won the match by four wickets.

Tendulkar's partner in the chase was Dhawal Kulkarni, not the one to bet on, especially when the pitch was moist and a new ball was due in five overs. But Kulkarni had the best guide in the world. He didn't flinch even when he was hit on the helmet by a snorter from medium-pacer Mohit Sharma, who had dismissed Tendulkar in the first innings. He got his reward when he hit Mohit in the next over back down the ground to take Mumbai past the target.

As soon as the ball trickled over the rope, Tendulkar turned towards the pavilion and raised his arms up in the air. Haryana players immediately surrounded him to congratulate and shake hands. Mumbai players too came rushing to the ground and carried Tendulkar out on their shoulders.

"It was a challenging wicket. It had a lot for the bowlers. It was fun to bat on it," Tendulkar said.

"Slow outfield too, so it might be 240 on paper, but it is 280 anywhere else. This is just the kind of outing I was looking for. It's fun. All about talking cricket, getting to know each other. It was all about keeping each other relaxed."

Praising the hosts, he said: "The Haryana side played very good cricket. They put on a very good show."

Tendulkar is set to end his international career in a little over fortnight's time with two Tests (Kolkata and Mumbai) against West Indies. He could have easily skipped this match but he chose to play and prepare himself for the important series.

With the benefit of hindsight, it was a correct decision as this innings will definitely give him lots of confidence for the upcoming matches.

"The West Indies series will be a good one. Something I will be looking forward to my last couple of Test matches. I hope it produces good cricket and lives up to the expectations of all my well-wishers," Tendulkar said.

lahli, a quaint rural outpost, was an unlikely location for Tendulkar's farewell. But the green pitch and competitive cricket played by both teams produced four days of exciting cricket. Thousands of fans who thronged the stadium to bid a fitting farewell to Tendlya added to the excitement. He thanked everyone for playing a part in his farewell.

"I want to thank the Haryana Cricket Association. I want to thank the security personnel. The police did a great job. Thanks to the people of lahli. Thank you everyone for making this match memorable for me," the star signed off.
