The Monsoon Climate of India is dominated by the North-East Monsoons and the South-West Monsoons. During summer the temperature becomes very high near the Tropic of Cancer. So a low pressure belt is created. But there is high pressure in the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. Therefore, the wind rushes from the high pressure belt to the low pressure belt. It becomes moisture laden while blowing over the sea. While crossing the equator it deflects to the right and blows from the South-West direction. So it is called the South-West Monsoon.

The wind divides into two branches. They are:

1. Arabian Sea branch

It causes heavy rain on the Western slopes of the Western Ghat Mountains. Then it passes over the Deccan which receives scanty rainfall. It moves to the north and central India where there is rain. A small part of it blows straight to the Aravallis.

2. Bay of Bengal branch

It enters Bangladesh, West Bengal and Orissa. It goes to the North and North-East to the foothills of the Himalayas and the Meghalaya plateau. There is heavy rainfall. Mawsynram near Cherrapunjee has the highest rainfall in the world.

Then the wind turns left and passes over the plains of Northern India. Rainfall decreases as the wind moves towards the West.

There is rain from June to September.

The conditions reverse during winter. There is high pressure over the Indian landmass and the surrounding areas have a low pressure. So the wind blows from the Northern-East to the Southern part. The North-East Monsoon wind originates from land so it does not have moisture. So there is not much rainfall in winter. However, the Coromandel coast receives heavy rainfall.
