In case of ortho-nitrophenol, the nitro group and OH group are close to each other, while for para-nitrophenol,it is not possible to form hydrogen bonds, as coulombic forces are inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them, due to their electronegativity difference,o-nitrophenol forms intramolecular hydrogen bond
