Explanation:

Environmental degradation is the deterioration of the environment through depletion of resources such as air, water and soil; the destruction of ecosystems; habitat destruction; the extinction of wildlife; and pollution. It is defined as any change or disturbance to the environment perceived to be deleterious or undesirable.[1] As indicated by the I=PAT equation, environmental impact (I) or degradation is caused by the combination of an already very large and increasing human population (P), continually increasing economic growth or per capita affluence (A), and the application of resource-depleting and polluting technology (T).[2][3]

Environmental degradation is one of the ten threats officially cautioned by the High-level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change of the United Nations. The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction defines environmental degradation as "the reduction of the capacity of the environment to meet social and ecological objectives, and needs".[4] Environmental degradation comes in many types. When natural habitats are destroyed or natural resources are depleted, the environment is degraded. Efforts to counteract this problem include environmental protection and environmental resources management.

Answer:

Environmental degradation is the deterioration of the environment through depletion of resources such as air, water and soil. The destruction of ecosystem and extinction of wildlife. It is defined as any change of disturbance to the environment perceived to be deleterious or undesirable. It is brought about by the combination of an already very large and increasing human population that place their demands on these resources. According to the United Nations International Strategy for disaster reduction defines environmental degradation as “The reduction in the capacity of the environment to meet social and ecological objectives and needs.” When natural habitats are destroyed or depleted, theenvironment is degraded. Causes of Environmental degradation in Nairobi Human population growth The human population in Nairobi is expanding rapidly which goes hand in hand with the degradation of the environment at large measures. Humanities’ appetite for needs is disarranging the environment’s natural equilibrium. Production in industries are in emitting smoke and discharging chemicals that are polluting water resources. The available fresh water being affected by the climate is also stretched across ever an increasing global population. It is estimated that almost a quarter of the global population is living in area that is using more than 20% of their renewable water supply; water will rise with population. An increase in population means withdrawal from water supplies to domestic agricultural and industrial uses. In relation to the study of interrelationships, the ninth edition of Enger, Eldon D. Environmental science, states that environmental degradation occurs as a result of human population pressure that forces them to invent so many things using environmental resources. For instance, in the urban cities, there is a lot pollution which is the addition of matter or energy that degrades the environment for humans and other organisms. This is as a result of the size of population and the development of technology that ‘invents’new forms of pollutions. Wastes produced by the population cannot be broken down as fast as they were produced. As the population increases, people began to congregate and establish towns and cities. The release of large amount of smoke, biological wastes and trash faster than they could be absorbed and dispersed resulted in pollution, which leads to unhealthy living standards. Throughout the history, human have sought to improve living conditions and eliminate misery caused by hunger and diseases. In general, we rely on science and technology to improve our quality of life. However, with technological progress, the quality of life can be improved but it can also generate a new source of environmental degradation.
