The main sources of information about the Guptas are the following:

REIGN OF GUPTA PERIOD - SHORTCUT

The Gupta empire rose in the 4th century A.D. It is believed that the Gupta era began with Chandragupta I's reign in 320 A.D. After him, his son Samudragupta succeeded him. He was a great conqueror, an able statesman as well as a patron of arts. Succeding him was his son, Chandragupta II. He inherited the military genius of his father and extended the Gupta empire by conquest of his own. His court was adorned by 'nine gems' including Kalidasa, Amarsimha. He was succeeded by Kumargupta. He was succeeded by Skandagupta.
