The poem starts with a grandfather sitting and his two grandchildren playing. This is a very peaceful scenario and has no sign of war or brutality. But when Peterkin found a smooth round object his curiosity rose. Kasper, the grandfather then told them the truth about the war but he did not even know the cause of the war. This shows the signs of fruitlessness of a war.
