Introduction
We have seen in the previous chapter how air entrapped in the
layers of wool saves the animals from severe cold. Because of the
same reason, we wear woollen clothes during winter. But, can you
explain why you are advised to wear light clothes in summer? You
feel cool while wearing cotton clothes and warm while wearing
woollen clothes.
We feel cold inside the house during winter months but warm when
we come out under the sun. So, how do we feel hot or cold? Let us
now see what heat is.
Heat
Heat is a form of energy. It is transferred by the difference in
temperature. When we rub our hands during winter, the hands
become hot. Here, the mechanical action of rubbing generates the
heat.
In our day-to-day life, we find many things that are hot or cold.
The ice cubes in the refrigerator are cold and the freshly cooked
food is hot. Do you sip from a glass of milk the moment it is served?
No, you wait for it to cool down a bit. You touch the glass with your
palms to know if you can have it. So, to know whether objects are
hot or cold, we rely on our sense of touch. But this can be quite
misleading. Let us perform Activity 1 to understand this. in this how much one word asnswer
