It was invented in 1631 by French mathematician Pierre Vernier(1580–1637).

Vernier calliper is an instrument by which we can measure very small length, thickness, inner diameter, outer diameter, etc.

The calipers have two scales, the main scale and the vernier scale. Together, these scales give a measurement of a distance between two inner faces of the jaws.

Least count of main scale = 0.1

Least count of vernier scale
= Least count of main scale/Total number of divisions on vernier scale.
= 0.1 / 10
= 0.01.
Therefore Least count of vernier scale = 0.01...

Reading of vernier scale= Number of divisions on main scale × Least count of main scale + Number of divisions on vernier scale × least count of vernier scale.
