Answer:

Invictus – William Ernest Henley

Appreciation

The poem ‘Invictus’ is written by William Ernest Henley. It talks about the will power and determination of one to face the ordeals in life. Life is not decorated with rose petals. There will be many challenges and threats. But the presence of mind and courage to face all hostile circumstances is needed. Whatever may be the situation, one should ready to take the responsibility to himself or herself for it. None to be blamed for the unfortunate happenings in life. The poet emphasises saying that ‘I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul’.

It is an inspirational poem. It helps to boost the positive attitude towards life and make one fit enough to fight and triumph in the life. Though the poem is short, it has a powerful message with powerful words such as ‘unconquerable’, ‘unbowed’ and ‘unafraid’. Poetic devices like Personification in the line ‘In the fell clutch of circumstance’ Repetition in the line ‘Finds, and shall find, me unafraid’, etc. add beauty of the poem.

The most fascinating part of the poem for me is, “I am the master of my life; I am the captain of my soul.”
