Iodine is necessary for the synthesis of (b) Thyroxine hormone.  

This hormone is produced by thyroid gland. It plays a vital role in metabolic activity, brains development, and heart function. The flow of thyroxine is controlled by pituitary gland, thyroid gland, and hypothalamus.

Thyroid gland converts iodine to thyroxine.

If there is too much amount of thyroxine, it is called as hyperthyroidism. This causes swelling of neck. The symptoms are weight loss and increased appetite.

If the presence of thyroxine is less, then it is called as hypothyroidism. This mental impairment and reduction in fertility.
