aluminium chloride is covalent, when it dissolves in water, ions are produced. Six water molecules bond to the aluminium to give an ion with the formula Al(H2O)63+. It's called the hexaaquaaluminium ion - which translates as six ("hexa") water molecules ("aqua") wrapped around analuminium ion.
